Last night I had the opportunity to attend a local event and meet some new people. I was totally into the idea until the day of - which is pretty on par because I always love the idea of going out and meeting people but I’m also not a fan of leaving my house and meeting new people. The struggle is real, people.
As an introvert, these kinds of things are always anxiety inducing but I know myself well enough to know that once I actually get there and settle in, I will have a great time and hopefully only be awkward a small portion of the time. 🤞🏼
Adding to my social anxiety is the small fact that I am in a wheelchair. This makes showing up to a place, alone, where I know no one even more intimidating. What I was reminded of again last night and would like to share again with you:
NOBODY GIVES A SHIT
It’s one of those things that seems to only bother and affect me. I’m sure there are people who might be momentarily taken aback, or wonder ‘what happened’ to me, but in reality, it really doesn’t faze anyone. The one thing about myself that I actively have to emotionally deal with almost every day is really all for naught. It’s not you, it’s me. Literally.
Why am I sharing with you, the people reading this, most of whom are not sitting in a wheelchair? Because everyone has something they fear. Most people have some mental or physical trait that holds them back. I’m here to let you know, it’s all in your head. Let me repeat:
NOBODY GIVES A SHIT
Sometimes it’s your weight. Sometimes it’s your past. Sometimes it’s just something that might come up in conversation. Whatever it is, I promise, it bothers you way more than it will bother anyone else. Most of the time, no one will give it a second thought.
Sometimes - NO, most of the time - it is a good idea to get out of your comfort zone. Don’t let the voices in your head hold you back from what might be some amazing experiences or making some potentially great new friends or acquaintances. Wouldn’t it be a shame to miss out on something like that?
We are all capable of so much more than we believe ourselves to be. Put yourself out there. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won’t. Either way, take the chance.
I do know one thing for sure: you’ll regret 100% of the chances you don’t take.✌🏼 #longisland #gilbertaz #nobodycares #nofucks #wheelchair #sci #rollwithit
