Off-Road Adventure

I finally got a chance to really get out into nature and use the badass off-road chair my husband built for me.

My family is here visiting so we went for a hike at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. They let us know upon arrival that the trail gets pretty steep at one point so it’s not suitable for a wheelchair.... bitch, please..:

I rolled up to the admission area in that badass chair like a fucking tank. 😂

First stop was the bathroom (of course) which was probably the most difficult feat of the day as the chair was made for hiking, not navigating narrow openings. I may or may not have taken out a couple of senior citizens waiting on line for the restroom but I’m still learning so it is what it is....

We started out our hike by making sarcastic jokes amongst ourselves about how amazing my husband is because in my family that’s the way we show our affection. Everyone is still in awe that he created that bad boy but that’s not going to stop them from referring to him as “my hero” for the day in a very loving, snarky way.

I was able to push myself around mostly and he helped me up the steeper parts. It was pretty amazing to move around the desert with such ease on my own and when I needed help, not have whoever was behind me have to hunch over and hold me in a wheelie. The chair made it smooth and comfortable and allowed me to get everywhere without a problem.

Toward the end there was one small, super narrow area that I couldn’t fit through so my husband had to piggy back me through while my brother carried the chair. They all got to laugh and sarcastically call him “my hero” as we came around the bend - which I’m sure made everyone’s day complete. (We’ve been married for twenty years so he should be used to the abuse by now 😜)

All in all, it was fucking awesome. The off-road chair is a success in every way. For me, it was just incredible to be included as a part of the hike without going anyplace ‘special’ and being able to keep up with everyone without missing a beat.

All kidding aside, my man really is my hero and building that chair will always be the most amazing surprise... but imma still make fun of him anyway 😘

*in case you plan on visiting Boyce Thompson, they did just receive a grant to expand that area of the trail to make it “wheelchair accessible”
