Relationships 101

Something that’s been coming up a lot lately are relationships. For me, I think the love and support that has surrounded me since day one is what really kept me going and prevented me from going to a very dark place.

I’m lucky, what can I say.

We all have different kinds of relationships- family, friends, significant others and they all have an effect on our lives, especially how we see ourselves.

I’m going to spend some time this week addressing different relationships in my life and what they have done for (or against) me.

Being physically limited kind of sucks. There are so many places I just can’t go or get into - or wouldn’t be able to if I were on my own. Sometimes I am alone - I don’t always bring my entourage, but it only serves to remind me how lucky I am to have so many amazing people in my life.

I remember my first trip to Manhattan with my friends back in the 90s. We were so excited to take the train into the city by ourselves. That excitement was short lived once we got off the train and onto the platform only to find out that there was no elevator. I know, right? WTF? Luckily there were a bunch of us so these amazing friends all pitched in and helped carry me up a million steps - I know, I counted.

It was just one of many times that my people have been there for me. Raise your hand if we hung out and you had to pick me up and put me on a toilet because I couldn’t fit in the bathroom. Raise two hands if you were drunk 😜😜

But for real, do you like when people see you sitting on a toilet? Me neither. It’s totally bogus, but it’s like mama always says, “do the best with what you got,” and when you gotta go, you gotta go.

If you’re friends with me on Facebook, you’ve probably seen pictures of me tubing or kayaking down the river. Ever wonder how I got there? Every think about where my wheelchair is? Well, let me tell you:

My incredibly amazing husband piggybacks me 1/8-1/4 mile from the car, to the river, and back again. Before he carries me, he carries all of our stuff. We live in Arizona when it’s usually 110° during tubing season. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is. I mean, I’m definitely worth it, I’m pretty amazing myself, but worth four round trips in the blazing sun? Well, yes, totally 😂

I am beyond fortunate to be surrounded by people who are willing to do those things for me. Not just once, but time and time again. They make it possible for me to do things I wouldn’t be able to on my own and remove a lot of boundaries I would otherwise face. They never think twice about doing it and that’s what makes them even more special.
